Barloworld Equipment and Apprenticeship Opportunities

Barloworld Equipment, a long-standing leader in the heavy equipment and earthmoving sector, has officially opened applications for its latest Apprenticeship Programme. This opportunity is aimed at motivated young South Africans who want to begin a career in heavy machinery, engineering, and technical services. For decades, Barloworld Equipment has played a key role in developing skilled artisans across the country, and this apprenticeship continues that tradition by offering structured training, hands-on experience, and a clear pathway into the industry.
Young people passionate about mechanics, engineering, and problem-solving are strongly encouraged to apply. The programme offers exposure to world-class machinery and real industry environments, supported by experienced technicians and mentors.
The Curriculum of the Apprenticeship
As an apprentice, you will work closely with qualified technicians and gain practical experience on heavy earthmoving equipment. Your daily responsibilities will include a variety of technical tasks designed to help you build confidence and develop the essential skills needed for a successful career as a heavy equipment technician.
Some of the key outputs of the role include:
- Inspecting heavy earthmoving machinery, ensuring that equipment is safe, functional, and ready for operation.
- Carrying out basic troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and repairs under supervision. This practical experience will form the foundation of your technical skillset.
- Removing and installing components either in the workshop or directly at customer sites, giving you exposure to different working environments.
- Ordering parts when required and ensuring that the correct components are sourced for each repair or service.Managing your own administration, including completing service reports, logging labour time, returning parts, and tracking expenses.
- Compiling accurate customer machine analysis, including completing Machine Inspection Reports (MIR) and other documentation.
Each of these responsibilities contributes to developing a well-rounded technician capable of diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining earthmoving equipment with precision and professionalism. These duties will equip an individual to work in international communities.
The Needed Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for the apprenticeship programme, applicants must meet several academic and competency requirements. These ensure that participants have the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in the technical training environment. Barloworld Equipment requires applicants to have:
- Grade 12 or N3 with Pure Mathematics, with a minimum pass mark of 45%
(Note: Functional Mathematics does not meet this requirement.) - Grade 12 with English, minimum 45% pass, to ensure strong communication and comprehension skills.
- Grade 12 or N3 with Physical Science, minimum 45% pass, as physics is essential for understanding mechanical and electrical systems.
- N2/N3 with relevant theory, which is considered an added advantage. Relevant subjects include Motor Theory, Diesel Theory, electrical theory, or electronic theory.
- A Technician for the World certificate will be an added advantage for applicants who have participated in the Caterpillar training initiative.
- A Code B Learner’s Licence (light motor vehicle) is not mandatory, but it will strengthen your application, especially for fieldwork assignments.
Beyond qualifications, candidates should demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and the ability to work in a technical, safety-focused environment. Apprenticeship programmes are demanding, and Barloworld Equipment seeks young people who are committed to completing their training and growing into skilled artisans.
Importance of the Apprenticeship Position
South Africa continues to face a shortage of qualified artisans, particularly in mechanical and technical fields. Apprenticeships like this play a vital role in addressing that gap by giving young people access to accredited training pathways. With the proper dedication, learners who complete the programme can progress into permanent technician roles or continue further studies in engineering, heavy machinery, and related fields.
Barloworld Equipment’s apprenticeship is well regarded for combining classroom-based learning with hands-on practice. This blended approach helps prepare apprentices not only for the job but also for long-term career development. Successful candidates have the opportunity to work on world-class machinery, learn from experts, and gain experience valued across the industry.
