The Africa Technical Apprenticeship Network (ATAN) is a forward-looking youth employment initiative designed to bridge the gap between education and the world of work for young Africans. The program connects recent graduates from universities and technical institutions with work-based learning opportunities in small and growing businesses (SGBs) across the continent. By focusing on practical experience and employer-driven demand, ATAN helps young people build the skills they need to succeed while supporting businesses that struggle to access qualified entry-level talent.
Across many African countries, youth unemployment and underemployment remain major challenges. While thousands of young people graduate each year with academic qualifications, many employers report difficulty finding job-ready candidates. At the same time, small and growing businesses often lack the resources to recruit, train, and retain new talent. ATAN addresses these challenges by offering a low-cost, demand-driven apprenticeship model that benefits both young professionals and employers.

How Does the Africa Technical Apprenticeship Network Operate

ATAN’s approach is centered on real workplace experience. Instead of relying solely on classroom-based training, the program places apprentices directly within businesses where they can learn on the job. These apprenticeships allow participants to gain hands-on technical experience, strengthen their professional skills, and develop a clearer understanding of workplace expectations.

GDI’s Role in Incubating ATAN

The Africa Technical Apprenticeship Network is being incubated by Global Development Incubator (GDI), which provides end-to-end support to help promising initiatives scale effectively. Through its full suite of platform services, GDI supports ATAN across strategy design, program implementation, recruitment, fundraising, and partnership development.
As the lead incubator, GDI is piloting ATAN during an 18-month design and validation phase in Kenya and Ghana. During this period, the focus is on understanding employer demand, improving apprentice preparedness, and strengthening retention outcomes. GDI is also working closely with universities, technical institutions, and ecosystem partners to co-create systems that can be scaled sustainably across different contexts.
An important part of this process is ensuring that ATAN evolves into a strong, independent organization. GDI is supporting ATAN’s transition to an entity positioned for long-term growth, financial sustainability, and regional expansion. This includes building governance structures, refining the operating model, and developing partnerships that will support future scale.

ATAN is more than an apprenticeship program—it is a systems-level response to youth employment challenges in Africa. By aligning education outcomes with labor market needs, the initiative helps young people gain relevant experience while supporting businesses that drive economic growth.
