Profile of the Elimu Fund

The Elimu Kenya Scholarship Fund (Elimu Fund) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organisation that seeks contributions from individuals, groups, corporations, and foundations to provide hope, opportunity, and access to education through scholarships to Kenyan students and orphans with financial needs who display academic excellence and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society. The Elimu Fund was officially launched on July 23, 2005.

Elimu Funds and Setbacks

  • Kenya is going through an important political and economic transition.
  • The 2003 “Free Primary Education” policy abolished primary school fees and levies, easing household financial burden.
  • Households and public and private schools responded immediately.
  • The primary education gross enrollment rate jumped to over 100%, with student enrollment increasing by close to 1 million from the previous year.
  • The growth in primary education and increased participation have increased demand for secondary education.
Many of the students come from families that have been affected by AIDS as well as poverty.
  • Many finish primary school but lack funds for secondary education.
  • Kenya has 1.5 to 1.7 million children who have been orphaned due to AIDS.
  • HIV/AIDS weakens families’ ability to support orphans with essentials, including education.
  • The number of OVC is expected to continue to rise for the foreseeable future.
  • The Elimu Fund provides educational opportunities to children in difficult circumstances, in line with Kenyan societal values, government policies, and guidelines.

The Elimu Fund Eliminates Discrimination in Education

We believe two key obstacles make it more difficult for poor Kenyan youth to access secondary education. First, secondary school tuition and related costs continue to skyrocket; the financial resources needed to support a secondary education constitute the most serious challenge for many Kenyan families. Indeed, many committed parents lack the resources to finance their children’s education. Second, the public resources available are inadequate to meet the growing demand.
The Elimu Scholarship provides individuals with the opportunity to actualize their potential. Through the Elimu scholarship, the country gets well-prepared talents. The fund supports the training of doctors, lawyers, engineers, and other skilled professionals who contribute to the country’s economy.

Conclusion on Elimu Scholarship

The Elimu Scholarship Fund Program is a good practice that solves internal problems with internal means. It is an initiative that can be replicated in other countries, as it addresses an important societal need. Other countries may learn from Kenya and modify the program according to their needs.
