Amref Health Africa: Company Details, Mission, and Programs

Amref Health Africa is the largest African-led and African-staffed international health development non-governmental organisation (NGO). Founded in 1957 (originally as the African Medical and Research Foundation – AMREF), it is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates in over 35 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. With a staff of more than 2,000 and an annual reach of millions through 180+ programs, Amref focuses on transforming health systems within communities.

The Vision and Mission of Amref

  • Vision: Lasting health change in Africa.
  • Mission: To catalyse and drive community-led and people-centred health systems while addressing social determinants of health.
  • Core belief: Sustainable health improvement must come from empowered communities, not imposed externally. Amref trains local health workers, strengthens primary health care (PHC), promotes universal health coverage (UHC), and addresses critical issues such as maternal/child health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, neglected tropical diseases, water/sanitation, climate change, and health emergencies.
Amref aligns its work with Africa’s Agenda 2063, national health strategies, and global goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By 2026 and beyond, it emphasises functional Primary Care Networks (PCNs), digital health innovations, and equity for marginalised groups (women, youth, refugees, people with disabilities).
