Profile Description
The University of the Free State (UFS), one of South Africa’s leading research-intensive institutions, invites applications for a prestigious Postdoctoral Research Fellowship within the Division of Virology, under the School of Pathology in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
This fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity for early-career researchers to gain advanced research experience and professional development under the mentorship of distinguished academics. The program aims to strengthen scientific capacity in infectious disease research, virology, and translational protein science, with a particular focus on viral immunopathogenesis, antibody and protein engineering, and diagnostic development.

The Fellowship Goal
The UFS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Virology is designed to provide high-performing doctoral graduates with a platform to refine their research expertise, expand their publication record, and contribute to impactful health research in Africa. This fellowship supports both fundamental and translational research initiatives that address critical challenges in viral diseases, immunology, and molecular diagnostics.
Through this program, the University of the Free State aims to foster excellence in postgraduate research, strengthen global academic partnerships, and contribute to South Africa’s innovation ecosystem in biomedical science. The successful prospective fellow will gain skills so much needed in the biomedical discipline.
Key Responsibilities
Successful fellows will be expected to undertake the following responsibilities:
- Scholarly Publications:
Produce or co-author at least three accredited scholarly publications per year, including articles in DHET-accredited journals or book chapters. Continuation of the fellowship is contingent upon satisfactory performance and submission of annual progress reports. - Research and Innovation:
Initiate independent research projects that align with the division’s strategic objectives and actively pursue external research funding opportunities to support their work. - Academic Engagement:
Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of the Free State and participate fully in the programs of the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research. - Mentorship and Collaboration:
Contribute to the academic environment by providing mentorship to postgraduate students, participating in seminars, and collaborating in multidisciplinary research activities within the School of Pathology.
Qualification Criteria
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Hold a PhD in virology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, or a closely related discipline, awarded within the past five (5) years.
- Demonstrate a solid publication record, research excellence, and potential for leadership in scientific innovation.
- May not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the fellowship.
- Must be willing and able to relocate to Bloemfontein for the duration of the fellowship, as this is a residential position requiring a minimum of 80% on-campus presence.
- Open to applicants of all nationalities; however, preference will be given to South African citizens in accordance with the University’s Employment Equity Plan.
