Job Description

Please note the appropriate Tier indicated in the vacancy title and ensure that you hold the applicable contract as defined below.
Tier 1: UNDP, UNCDF, and UNV staff holding permanent (PA) and fixed-term (FTA) appointments (defined as “internal” candidates).
Tier 2: UNDP, UNCDF, and UNV staff holding temporary appointments (TA), personnel on regular PSA contracts, and Expert and Specialist UN Volunteers.
Tier 3: All other contract types from UNDP, UNCDF, UNV, and other agencies, as well as external candidates.

Background

After the inauguration, The Gambia’s third president in January 2017. Moving quickly to show Gambia’s citizens the benefits of democratic and accountable governance, President Barrow immediately sought the assistance of the United Nations and the international community in support of a reform agenda that included overhauling the country’s institutions, laying a new foundation of respect for the rule of law, addressing past human right abuses, and promoting national reconciliationThe Gambia became eligible for funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Peace and Recovery Facility (PRF) in September 2018 after submitting a report outlining the conflict and development situation. The report emphasised addressing conflict drivers and sustaining peace through targeted interventions.
Four Peacebuilding Priority areas were identified to guide support from 2018 to 2023. The Gambia is currently undergoing re-eligibility for PBF funding for 2024–2028. The support focuses on transitional justice, land and natural resource conflicts, women and youth participation in political and decision-making processes, and reintegration of returnees. Under the guidance of the Admin/Procurement Associate, the driver provides reliable, safe transportation to PBF programme staff, the RCO, and other senior UN officials and visitors, maintaining discretion, integrity, and responsibility, and demonstrating strong knowledge of protocol and security. The driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact, and the ability to work with diverse national and cultural backgrounds.nds.
At the supervisor’s request, the driver may also transport operations and programme staff, consultants, experts, and UN staff on mission. The PBF Secretariat supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) Joint Steering Committee (JSC) in The Gambia by overseeing and coordinating the Peacebuilding Priority programme implementation from 2018 to 2020. The JSC is co-chaired by the Secretary General in the Office of the President and the United Nations Resident Coordinator. The Secretariat assists the JSC in monitoring and reporting on PBF projects, coordinating activities, supporting evaluations, and building capacity in peacebuilding programming and communication.
The PBF Secretariat typically consists of 1 PBF Coordinator; 1 Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist; 1 Knowledge management and Comms Associate, 1 Administrative & Finance Associate and 1 Driver.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services;
Provide reliable and safe driving by operating office vehicles to transport the UNDP Resident Representative, United Nations Resident Coordinator, other senior officials, visitors, and for mail and document delivery. Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport, assisting with visa and customs formalities as needed.
  • Proper use of the vehicle
Ensure cost savings by operating the vehicle efficiently, maintaining accurate daily logs, and contributing to vehicle maintenance plans and reports.
  • Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle
Ensure proper daily maintenance of the assigned vehicle by performing timely minor repairs, arranging major repairs as needed, changing oil as required, checking tyres and brakes, and maintaining cleanliness.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Completion of Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s license.

Experience:

  •  3 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations, and skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance
  • Experience in the basic use of computers and relevant office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and ability to use web-based management and electronic log, file and/or scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of protocols and security requirements is an advantage.
