The 2026  Yale Young African Scholars Program

  • The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program 2026 is now open for applications, offering talented students across Africa the chance to gain academic exposure, mentorship, and access to global educational opportunities.
  • Organized by Yale University, this prestigious program aims to inspire and empower the next generation of African leaders by equipping them with the necessary tools for academic and professional success.
  • YYAS is not just a program—it’s a transformative experience that provides high-achieving secondary school students with academic enrichment, leadership training, and access to university preparation resources.
  • Each year, students from across the continent apply, and those selected join a global community of peers who are passionate about education and making an impact in their communities.

Eligibility Criteria for the YYAS 2026

To be eligible for the Yale Young African Scholars Program, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
  • Age Requirement: Students must be between 14 and 18 years old on the first day of the program (July 16, 2026). A typical YYAS student is usually between 16 and 17 years old.
  • English Proficiency: Applicants must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum that is conducted entirely in English.
  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. Refugees residing in African countries are also eligible.
  • School Location: Applicants must currently be attending secondary school in an African country.
  • Grade Level: Students must be in 10th or 11th grade (or international equivalents).
  • Graduation Date:
    • For students in the Northern Hemisphere: Must graduate between May/June 2027 and May/June 2028.
    • For students in the Southern Hemisphere: You must graduate between November 2026 and December 2027.
Students currently in their final year of secondary school, those who have already graduated, or university students are not eligible to apply.

Application Documents

The application process is designed to evaluate students holistically. There are three main components:
  1. Completed Application Form
    • Students must complete an online application.
    • The form includes a 500-word essay, two short responses, and information about extracurricular activities and the school attended.
  2. Official Transcript or Grade Reports
    • Applicants must upload transcripts or grade reports from each year of secondary school (generally grades 9–11).
    • National exam scores can be submitted if available, but they are not required.
    • If a student has attended more than one school, records from all schools must be provided.
    • Primary school certificates or records are not required for submission.
  3. One Teacher Recommendation
    • Recommendations must be submitted via an online recommendation form.
    • The form will be emailed directly to the teacher once the applicant provides their contact details.
    • Recommendations from parents, guardians, family members, or paid tutors will not be accepted.
YYAS places strong emphasis on teacher recommendations, as they provide valuable insight into a student’s abilities and character across diverse educational contexts.

Important Dates to Consult

  • Application Deadline: Check the portal for closing dates (usually early in the year before the program begins).
  • Decision Notification: Applicants will be notified of their status electronically by late March 2026.
  • Selection Process: YYAS does not have minimum grade or test score requirements. However, applicants must demonstrate academic ability, leadership potential, and strong English proficiency.
